One of The Gambia’s prolific and outstanding DJ’s in recent years, DJ Lamin Cham of the Champion Sound Movement recently bagged an international award in recognition of his participation in the successful celebrations of the African Liberation Day (ALD) held in Luckville Maryland US.
Champion DJ as he is fondly called was awarded by The Gambian American Association, a charity organisation based in Washington DC in the United States of America. The international renowned DJ who has already established a name for himself both in The Gambia, UK and the US has continued to win the hearts of many music enthusiasts each time he performed in public. The annual event, which is designed to honour outstanding personalities in societies, also witnessed the decoration of another Gambian international figure and football legend, Alhaji Biri Biri Njie.
The night, according to Cham, witnessed cloudburst stage performances by The Gambia’s finest mbalax sensations- Pa Omar Jack alias POJ, together with international Gambian DJ’s such as Champion DJ Lamin Cham and Mosses, the proprietor of Junction Vibes. Reacting to the award, Champion DJ expressed profound appreciation saying it’s a challenge for him to redouble his efforts towards the development and promotion of Gambian music in general. “I am glad that people appreciates my little effort and rewards me,” he stated, while expressing thanks to the entire members of ALD for their foresight in awarding him the international accolade.
He further explained that during the night, Gambian hits such as Sewuruba, Boukaraboo, and Sabarr among others were given prominence. It would be recalled that this award is among series of local and international awards the Champion DJ grabbed in recent years due to his prolific and continuous commitment towards the development of The Gambia’s music industry.
