Windhoek — Omaheke Region’s emerging sprinter Tjimbatu Kauajo and Shiilvmwene Shilongo (Ohangwena Region) are to lead a strong three-member team to represent Namibia at the 5-day IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille, France on July 6.

Up-and-coming javelin thrower Suné Wittman completes the line-up.

The trio was selected for the international youth competition following their sterling showing at the just concluded Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Southern Region Youth Championships held in Windhoek last month.

Kauajo won a silver medal in the boys 200m sprint at the CAA Southern Region Youth Championships when he tied with South African 200m sprinter Fana Mogokeng in a time of 21.84 s.

Shilongo clocked a time of 7:13.77 to clinch the gold medal in the girls 2000-meter steeplechase while Witmann outclassed her competitors when she lashed a commendable distance of 43.28 meters in the girls javelin throw.

Athletics Namibia President, Frank Fredericks, expressed confidence in the ability of the youngsters and believes the young athletes will compete well in France, saying: “The three athletes have shown great promise during the year when they competed in the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Southern Region Youth Championships and I see no reason why they should not acquit themselves well and better their personal best times.”

Mwiila Modestus will accompany the youngsters as team manager.
