Peterborough’s Craig Mackail-Smith has held talks with one Premier League club over a transfer, but, according to director of football Barry Fry, he is waiting to see if other offers materialise before making a decision.
Mackail-Smith, 27, fired Posh back into the Championship last season with 35 goals in all competitions and is understood to be being pursued by several top-flight clubs, including the likes of Everton, Wigan, Norwich and QPR.
Fry told the Evening Telegraph: “We have accepted one bid for Craig at this stage and have allowed him to speak to that Premier League club.
“I know Craig has spoken to the manager of the club concerned but he certainly hasn’t agreed to anything as yet.
“Craig wants to keep his options open because he knows there are at least a dozen clubs in for him.”
Mackail-Smith is almost certain to leave London Road after an exceptional season that saw him break into the Scotland setup, making his debut as an 87th-minute substitute in a friendly against Brazil in March.
The forward was the subject of interest from newly-promoted Norwich in the January transfer window but the Canaries did not meet Peterborough’s valuation of him at the time. They may now return with an improved offer.
Mackail-Smith scored in Posh’s 3-0 victory against Huddersfield at Old Trafford that sealed a return to the Championship for Darren Ferguson’s side.
