On Tuesday, Athletics Namibia announced the three athletes that will represent the country at the 2011 IAAF World Youth Championships between July 6 and 10 in Lille, France.

In the track events, Tjimbatu Kauajo from the Omaheke region will compete in the male 200m event, with Ohangwena’s Shiivomwene Shilongo in action over the 2000m steeplechase for females. The third competitor is SunĂ© Witmann from Khomas, who will take part in the ladies Javelin.

The team will be led by team manager Mwiila Modestus.

“The three athletes have shown great promise during the year, when they competed in the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Southern Region Youth Championships,” said Frank Fredericks, President of Athletics Namibia.

Kauajo, Shilongo and Witmann were all selected for the international competition following sterling performances at the recently concluded Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Southern Region Youth Championships held in Windhoek. Kauajo managed a silver medal in the 200m at that meet, tied on 21,84s with South Africa’s Fana Mogokeng, who got gold.

Shilongo clocked a time of seven minutes and 13,77 to clinch the gold medal in the 2000m steeplechase, whilst Witmann out-classed her fellow competitors when she threw a distance of 43,28m in the javelin.
