Maputo — Luis Boavida on Monday was appointed to the post of Secretary General of the opposition party Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM).
Boavida was appointed to this post by the leader of MDM, Daviz Simango, and the decision was ratified by the party’s National Council which met on Monday in the northern city of Pemba, Cabo Delgado province.
The post had previously been held by university lecturer Ismael Mussa, who recently asked to be released from his post.
Before joining MDM, Luis Boavida represented the largest opposition party, Renamo, in the country’s parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, where he was one of the party’s most aggressive orators.
Until Monday he was the national coordinator of MDM for the provinces of Cabo Delgado and Niassa.
The National Council also appointed Maria Moreno (another former Renamo deputy), Rangariranhe Pedro and Carlos Bernardo to the party’s Political Commission.
