Veteran QPR striker Heidar Helguson believes that the confidence gained from winning the Championship title puts the side in good stead to consolidate their Premier League status next season.

The 33-year-old also indicated that strong home support would be a positive factor in the upcoming campaign.

“We’ll go into the Premier League with a lot of confidence because we’re used to winning,” the Icelandic striker told the club’s official website.

“Loftus Road is quite a tight ground too and the atmosphere that can be created here is fantastic.

“The fans will be massive. We’re going to need them every week.”

Helguson had spent much of the 2009-10 season on loan at Watford, but broke back into the QPR first-team reckoning this year, scoring 13 goals as the R’s finished top of the Championship.

The Icelandic striker, who has scored twelve times in fifty-three appearances for his country, has been rewarded for his good club form with a new one-year contract and will be raring to go in the Premier League, a competition he last played in back in 2008 for Bolton before making the move to Loftus Road.

As a veteran of the top flight, Helguson knows that experience will be vital in the battle against relegation.

“It’s important that we have experience in the squad, because the leap from the Championship to the Premier League is quite big,” he admitted.

“We’re going to need all the help we can get – plus a few new fresh faces.”

QPR are likely to be busy in the transfer market this summer although the situation behind the scenes remains unsettled, with manager Neil Warnock’s future said to be uncertain.
