Blackburn Rovers are powerless to stop Manchester United coming in for Phil Jones – Jason Roberts

With Phil Jones’ imminent transfer to Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers forward Jason Roberts admits there is little that can be done when the big clubs come calling.

The £16 million-rated defender is expected to join the Premier League champions after undergoing a medical at the club on Wednesday.

Roberts told BBC Radio Five Live: “When Manchester United come calling there aren’t many clubs who keep their players.

“It’s one of those things but hopefully he’ll go on to bigger and better things and we’ll improve too – we will be looking at the top 10 next year.”

The England Under-21 is reported to have spoken to Arsene Wenger on Tuesday night about a potential move to the Emirates, but it appears he has favoured a move to Old Trafford.

Jones is thought to be one of many players heading for Old Trafford this summer. Sir Alex Ferguson isn’t one for resting on his laurels, and has been linked with moves for Aston Villa winger Ashley Young, Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David De Gea as well as Luka Modric and Wesley Sneijder.

Roberts expects new owners Venky’s to keep faith with manager Steve Kean and give him funds to help the club build on last season’s 15th-place finish.

“We haven’t bought anyone in yet but I’m sure we’ll be busy in the transfer market,” said the striker.

“I’ve got a feeling we’re going to go into the market and be successful.”

Jones has impressed since breaking into the Blackburn team last season and United fans will be able to see what they are getting when Jones plays for the England Under-21 team in the European Championships in Denmark this summer.
