Rangers manager Ally McCoist has expressed his interest in bringing Aston Villa defender Carlos Cuellar back to the SPL.

Cuellar spent the 2007-08 season at Ibrox and played in a Uefa Cup final before moving to Villa for just under £8 million.

The Spaniard is entering the final year of his contract at Villa Park which may make any deal more affordable for the Glasgow giants.

Speaking to the Daily Record, McCoist said: “I would be lying if I said I wasn’t interested in a player of Carlos’ quality.”

A deal doesn’t look like being done quickly as Villa are currently without a manager following Gerard Houllier’s departure and McCoist acknowledges that a deal is unlikely to be done until this is resolved.

He explained: “The managerial situation at Villa complicates the issue but as soon as they have made an appointment I’ll be in touch to ask about Carlos’ availability.”

Cuellar has endured a tough time recently at Villa as a succession injuries have seen him drop down the pecking order.

The Spaniard has already claimed he is ready for a dream move back to the SPL. The increased potential for winning trophies and competing in the Champions League is said to be a big attraction for the former Osasuna man.

Cuellar has made 76 league appearances for Villa but made only seven so far in 2011.
