SOME participants in the recent Namibian Local Authorities Sports and Recreation Association Games held in the capital last weekend, expressed disappointment with the event.

The games were held from May 26 to 28 for employees of local authorities countrywide.

This year, 23 local authorities from various parts of the country took part.

A source who wishes to remain anonymous, told Nampa this week that some sports clubs brought along people who are not employed by local authorities to play on their behalf, something that is not allowed in the games.

“Some municipalities brought young people to come and play for them such as Namibian Police warrant officers and teachers, who are not employed at those municipalities,” the source said.

Another concern raised by the source was that municipal workers got subsistence and travel allowance to take part in the sports games but instead used their time to visit friends, do shopping and drink alcohol.

Nalasra’s acting Secretary-General (SG) Bartholomeus !Aibeb told Nampa that his office did not receive any official complaints from any local authority on the recent games.

He explained that the team from the Ruacana Municipality used a former teacher in its team.

“This person is currently an engineering student and is attached to that municipality,” explained !Aibeb.

He stressed that Nalasra has a constitutional arrangement that requires all local authorities to be present and participate in the games.

“I cannot confirm those complaints, but I have sent out a letter to all local authorities to give us some comments with regards to the games and they must respond by next week Wednesday,” he noted.

The 23 local authorities competed in different sports codes such as football, netball, volleyball, pool, darts, tug-of-war, marathon and a fun walk.
