Schalke have confirmed that they are interested in signing their former goalkeeper Jens Lehmann in the summer.

Reports in the German media in recent days have reported that the Royal Blues are keen to bring back the 41-year-old to the club in the wake of the departure of Manuel Neuer to Bayern Munich.

Lehmann came out of retirement in March this year to help his former club Arsenal for the remaining weeks of the Premier League season, and now Schalke want the former Germany international to be part of their squad for the 2011-12 campaign despite recruiting Ralf Faehrmann from Eintracht Frankfurt.

“We always said that we want to hire a second goalkeeper if Manuel Neuer leaves,” Schalke’s general manager Horst Heldt told dpa. “There are various scenarios and Jens Lehmann is a part of it.”

Faehrmann, 22, added his support to the arrival of his veteran compatriot and said: “I can learn a lot every day from Jens Lehmann.”

Lehmann started his professional career with Schalke in 1988 and played for them until 1998, making more than 250 appearances for the Royal Blues. He has since featured for AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal and Stuttgart.
