President J.E.A. Mills this morning appeared before the vetting committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to stake his claim, as flag bearer of the party for the 2012 general election.
The President who is seeking the mandate of the party to lead it into the next election is being challenged by Former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings who took her turn at the vetting Tuesday.
President Mills arrived at the NDC Headquarters flanked by members of ‘Get Atta Mills Endorsed’, (GAME) at 10:45am. GAME is a group of party loyalists who have endorsed President Mills’ second term bid.
Wearing a white shirt over a pair of black trousers, he headed straight into the conference room of the party where the vetting took place.
Meanwhile, party supporters drummed, sang and danced to party songs at the backgrond as the
one hour, fifteen minutes vetting session was held behind closed doors.
After the vetting, President Mills emerged from the session apparently pleased with the process and addressed journalists and the enthusiastic party members.
He said ‘the congress was not about who wins and who loses, but rather a passing phase in the democratic process of the party to elect a leader for the next general elections.’
“The party is one family and what we need right now is for unity among the rank and file, as we enter into the most challenging period of our country”.
“I would appeal to party members to exercise restraint and remain calm in the task ahead”, the President urged.
Sounding confident about the future, President Mills ended on the words, ‘we shall succeed.’
Mr Cletus Avoka, Majority Leader in Parliament and a member of the vetting committee explained that issues which bothered on unity of the party, the need to reconcile differences and stay focused were raised during the vetting.
Similar issues were raised during the Former First Lady’s vetting.
Mr Avoka said the committee would compile its report for the National Executive Committee of the Party for consideration.
The NDC goes to congress on July 8, 2011 in the Brong Ahafo regional capital of Sunyani to elect a flag bearer for the 2012 polls.
