Abuja – The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Aloysius Kastina-Alu, has enjoined court registrars and clerks to live above board in the discharge of their duties.
Katsina-Alu, who was represented by the Administrator, National Judicial Institute (NJI), retired Justice Umaru Eri, gave the charge at a three-day workshop for Court Registrars and Clerks.
He said that the contribution of court personnel was indispensable as it would fast track the desired standard and improvement in justice delivery.
The chief justice said that the workshop was necessary to sharpen the participants’ career in their areas of jurisdiction.
He described court registrars and clerks as operators of the engine room of the judiciary, whose absence could jeopardise proper delivery of justice.
He urged the officials to imbibe the spirit of transparency so that the judiciary could attain its potential height.
“Once you are upright and you have your integrity, you look straight forward to the face of people and make sure you live above board, you will never be out of the judiciary,’’ the CJN said.
He urged the participants to be bold, sensitive and honest in their work to ensure that Nigeria stood upright.
Justice Iche Ndu, the Chief Judge of Rivers, said that the workshop was designed to position the registrars and clerks to improve the administration of justice.
Ndu said no court could function effectively without supporting, staff such as registrars, clerks, balliffs and secretaries.
He said that the adjudicative function of judicial officers should be complementary to and supportive in the administration of justice.
According to him, all supporting staff of the judiciary must strive toward a better working relationship, exhibit diligence, transparency and integrity in the discharge of their duties.
“The performance of the registrars, court clerks and all supporting staff of the judiciary can make or mar the administration of justice,’’ the judge said.
He said both judicial and non-judicial staff of the Nigerian judiciary had a collective duty to maintain the dignity and respect of the judiciary.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that chief justices of various jurisdictions, President of Customary Court of Appeal, Khadis of Sharia courts were some of the dignitaries, who were present at the workshop. (NAN)
