Kenya youthful athletes converge today at Nyayo Stadium for national trials to pick teams for the World Youth Championship and Commonwealth Youth Games. The World Youth Championships are scheduled for July 6-11 in Lille, France while the Commonwealth Youth Games are planned for September 7-11 in Island of Man in Britain. The battle for places in the two teams has attracted teams from primary, secondary schools and colleges.

According to Athletics Kenya (AK) public relations officer Peter Angwenyi, the events will strictly feature athletes born in 1994/95. All the three institutions-Primary, secondary and colleges-have already held their trials and have teams ready for the two-day trials starting today at Nyayo.

“Primary and secondary schools have just ended their championships in Nyeri and Meru respectively while colleges held their event two weeks ago in Kericho,” said Angwenyi. He said while colleges can not be ruled out, the real battle will pit primary schools against their secondary counterparts.

World 6km women cross country champion Faith Chepngetich is expected to spearhead primary schools, alongside Caroline Chepkoech, who is the Africa 6km cross country champion. Other school girls who will be seeking places in the two teams are-Mary Mananu, Zipporah Wanjiru, Jepchirchir Cheruiyot , Alice Aprot and Norah Cherop.

At secondary level, Leonard Kosencha, who won gold in 800m and silver in 400m at the East Africa regional youth championship, will be the man to watch. Others will include Patrick Muaka, Nicholas Togom ,Gideon Kipketer, Dennis Kipruto, Edwin Mokua; all who took part in the Africa cross country championships.

AK vice chairman Jackson Tuwei had announced that the federation will partner with the Kenya Secondary School Association (KSSSA) during the event to come up with more strong and competitive teams for the two events. The event will be sponsored by National bank of Kenya. Tuwei said those, who will be selected will be required to report to camp on June 17 until they depart for France on July 2. The commonwealth youth team plans will be communicated later. Non-schooling athletes who are keen on the trials were required to register with AK a week ago.
