Tottenham‘s first signing of the transfer window, Brad Friedel, has fired a warning shot to fellow goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, insisting that he intends to be the club’s No.1 shot stopper.
The veteran rejected a one-year contract extension and left Aston Villa on a free transfer, electing to join Spurs.
The 40-year-old also had a chance to join Liverpool, but turned them down to focus on trying to playing regularly at White Hart Lane.
“Had I moved to Liverpool it would have been as a No.2,” Friedel told The Daily Mail.
“I hope to be in the starting XI but that’s down to Harry Redknapp.
“I am going to turn up to pre-season as fit as possible and hopefully be number one.
“I really feel Tottenham have the chance to get into that top four.”
The American has made 519 appearances for three different clubs – Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers and Villa – during a 14-year spell in English football.
