Urr — Sixteen senior secondary schools (SSS) across the country have qualified to compete in the second round of the Fanta Science and Mathematics quiz, sponsored by Gambega Company Gambia Limited. The regional competition was held last Friday at the Nasir Ahmaddiyya Secondary Senior School hall in Basse, Upper River Region and eight senior schools from Regions 5 and 6 participated in the competition.

During this competition, in which questions were drawn from various subjects; such as Mathematics, Biology, Physics, among others, Nasir Senior School defeated Fatoto Senior School; Brikama Ba SSS defeated Bansang SSS; Armitage SSS defeated Kaur SSS; and Diabugu SSS also defeated Nyakoi SSS, bringing the total number of schools that qualified for the second round of the competition to sixteen.

Speaking to the Daily Observer’s URR correspondent shortly after the competition, Babou Joof, senior education officer at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, hailed the participation of all schools, describing it as wonderful. According to him, the competition is meant to promote the learning and teaching of Science and Mathematics in schools and recalled that the competition started last year. He thanked Gambega for the sponsorship. Joof finally told the winning schools to get prepared for the second round of the competition; as they will be meeting with schools in the Greater Banjul Area.

Mamadi Ceesay, principal of Nasir Ahmadiyya Senior Secondary School, thanked Gambega for coming up with this initiative, noting that Science and Mathematics are paramount for national development, and therefore the students should be encouraged to take the two subjects seriously. At the end of the competition, a draw was done for the schools that will meet in the second round of the competition and it was revealed as follows: SOS Herman Gmeiner SSS vs Diabugu SSS; Nasir SSS vs Brikama Ba SSS; St. Augustine’s SSS vs St. Peter’s SSS; Tahir SSS vs Armitage SSS; Farafenni SSS vs Masroor SSS; Nusrat SSS vs Methodist Academy SSS; Muslim SSS vs St. Francis SSS; and Kotu SSS vs Siffoe SSS.

Readers could recall that this competition, which is shown on GRTS was initiated last year with the financial support of Gambega and supervised by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education. It is meant to promote the learning and teaching of Science and Mathematics at the senior school level, since development cannot take place in the absence of these two subjects.
