Striker Peter Crouch will reportedly not wear England’s colours on the international football scene as long as manager Fabio Capello is at the helm after he was omitted from the squad to face Switzerland at Wembley on Saturday.

The 30-year-old was told of Capello’s decision hours before kick-off as the Italian boss opted for Darren Bent playing up front on his own while Fulham striker Bobby Zamora made the bench ahead of Crouch despite having only been capped once before and after missing much of last season through injury.

According to the Mail, a close friend of Crouch said: “That is the last time he Crouch plays for Fabio Capello. It is almost a deliberate humiliation.

“Peter has always been loyal to England, regardless of the importance of the game.

“He’s got a fiancée and baby daughter. He could have been on holiday with them but wanted to be part of things, unlike some other players. And once again he has been treated badly.”

The former Liverpool player has scored 22 goals for England in 42 appearances, putting him in joint 16th place of England’s all-time top goalscorers.

Crouch joins goalkeeper Paul Robinson, Ben Foster and Wes Brown on the list of players who have turned their back on international duty while Capello remains the boss.
