Charles Nyende 4 June 2011 Nairobi — On the morning of April 20, a private jet touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, and a Qatari man stepped out and made his way to the arrivals hall. Once through immigration formalities Mohammed Bin Hammam was driven straight to the Panari Hotel on Mombasa Road.

He will look back and rue it. It was a long walk. Long, long, walk of shame.

What was David Obua thinking? He had enjoyed a decent game hitherto. In fact, moments earlier, he had created Geoffrey Massa’s goal to complete a 2-0 victory.

With Cranes leading 2-0 up on 65 minutes, Bobby Williamson introduced striker Geoffrey Sserunkuma for Obua.

Rather than walk to Sserunkuma and exchange good luck and thank you pleasantries on the touchline, Obua – visibly unhappy with the substitution – walked face down towards the bench.

Cranes coordinator Crispus Muyinda then handed him a bottle of mineral water but he ignored it, removed his shirt and threw it on the ground.

He then took a long walk to the dressing room amid sustained boos from fans.

After the game, Obua tried to justify his act when the media intercepted him in the mixed zone.

“Everyone reacts differently to frustrations,” he said. “I thought I was still playing and I wanted to score a goal for Ibra’s late mum.” Skipper Ibrahim Sekagya lost his mum some weeks back.

“So that was part of the frustrations. But the most important thing is we have won.” Not quite an ending he would have wanted, nonetheless.
