Aston Villa winger Ashley Young has insisted that his future is still undecided as he looks to have talks with the club’s chairman over the summer.
Young has been heavily linked with Liverpool and, in particular, Manchester United as both great rivals look to strengthen their squads significantly ahead of next season.
Despite reports from some quarters suggesting that Young may have already agreed to join a club, or that a club has already agreed a fee with Villa, the former Watford man claims his future has not yet been sorted out, but will be soon.
The England international only has one more year left on his contract, so the expectation is that Young will either sign a new contract or leave this summer with Villa unwilling to let him leave for free next July.
Young told reporters after England’s 2-2 draw with Switzerland on Saturday: “I’m going away on holiday but I said at the end of the season I would speak to the manager.
“That is where it stands. Now I’ll go back and speak to the chairman and we will take it from there.”
Young’s stock rose once again after he played an important role in England’s draw against the Swiss, a match in which the Three Lions were trailing 0-2 thanks to two Tranquillo Barnetta free-kicks.
The 25 year-old came on for Frank Lampard at half-time before going on to bag a goal and was named man of the match as he looked to put the Swiss defence under threat at every opportunity, ensuring that Arsenal defender Johan Djourou endured a torrid time.
He continued: “It was nice to get on the scoresheet. I was disappointed not to start but I took it on the chin.
“When you get the chance to come on, you just want to impress and I felt I did that today. The manager has named the team and you’ve just got to get on with it.
“I’ve got the character and the strength when I get my chance, to grab it with both hands and that’s what I did. I think I’ve shown that.
“I’m delighted at how things have gone all season and today.
“Getting the man of the match is nice but if you told me I could swap the man of the match for three points, I would have taken that.”
