Labour Minister Jeremiah C. Sulunteh says it calls for honesty, integrity, productivity and accountability while the nation is preparing for a decent work environment by all stakeholders of the labor sector of Liberia.

Minister Sulunteh said the passing of a Decent Work Bill will guarantee a decent environment for work in the country.

Minister Sulunteh made the statement over the weekend at the opening of a two-day Capacity Building Workshop for Labour Commissioners from the 14 leeward counties of Liberia in Gbarnga, Bong County.

The Labour Minister informed the Labour Commissioners that when the bill is passed, they will be number one to open that opportunity for the Labour sector to grow and will be the one to interpret the bill in their respective counties.

He said “unless your capacity as Labour Commissioners is strengthened, you will not be fully capable to interpret the bill.”

He noted that if Labor Commissioners must be the true interpreters of the Decent Work Bill, they must be trained themselves as foot soldiers for implementing the mandate of government thru the Ministry of Labour to create a Decent Work environment.

He said the workshop intended to help build the capacity of Labor Commissioners and to add value to their work and open more windows for opportunity of growth and development of the labor sector.

“If workers capacity is well built, where workers are prepared to work as a team in the labor sector, there will be growth and development for our country”.

He praised the Department of Administration and the Division of Labour Standards for organizing the workshop to build the capacities of Labour Commissioners of the Ministry.

For her part, the Superintendent of Bong County Lucia Herbert extolled the Ministry of Labour for choosing Bong County as the venue of the workshop.

She called on the Ministry of Labour not to limit the capacity building program of the Regional Labor Commissioners to training but also to consider providing the necessary materials that will enhance their work at their respective places of assignment.

She said it has been noted that many at times, they as county officials, benefit from training opportunity but the materials needed to put the skills learned to use are lacking.
