Internacional have turned down an offer from Tottenham for striker Leandro Damiao, the club’s president has confirmed.

    Goal.com
exclusively revealed last month that Spurs and Barcelona were set for talks with the player’s agent, with the north London club in a strong position to sign him.

But an offer of €12 million (£10.5m) from Tottenham for 70 per cent of the player’s rights has been rejected, and president Giovanni Luigi insists the Brazil international will only be allowed to leave at the end of the year and for a higher price.

He said: “It was the first concrete offer we’ve had.

“I told them that I didn’t want to sell now. I think they’ll return with a new offer. I advised them that he will only leave at the end of the year and for a far greater fee.”

Tottenham’s proposal came following the recommendation of their midfielder Sandro, who played alongside Damiao before moving to White Hart Lane last year.

Damiao struck 12 goals in 34 games for Internacional in 2010, including one in their Libertadores final victory over Guadalajara. He also finished as the Campeonato Gaucho’s 16-goal leading marksman during Inter’s run to the title.

Damiao made his Brazil debut in a 2-0 friendly win over Scotland in March, and although he failed to make the scoresheet, he hit the crossbar with a header and impressed with his movement and hold-up play.

The striker is currently part of Mano Menezes’ squad for the forthcoming internationals against Netherlands and Romania.
