Aston Villa striker Darren Bent has laughed off suggestions that he may be concerned that Harry Redknapp could be the next England boss.
Bent endured a poor run at Tottenham under Redknapp and was eventually sold to Sunderland after the Spurs manager claimed his wife could have scored a chance missed by the England international.
Now at Villa, and in encouraging goalscoring form both domestically and internationally, Bent has dismissed claims he might be worried if Redknapp was appointed.
He was quoted as saying by The Times: “I’ll just play as well as I can for my club side. If Harry gets the job, good luck to him.
“If I keep playing well for my club and he doesn’t pick me, then obviously something is going on. But at the same time, I’m sure he’ll do a good job. We’ll have to see.”
Since leaving Spurs the England forward has gone on an incredible scoring run and has continued that into his stint at Villa Park, scoring nine goals in 16 appearances for the Midlanders.
After two goals with England this season, against Switzerland and Wales, the former Ipswich Town star has seemingly garnered new found confidence and has at least impressed current boss Fabio Capello.
He continued: “I’m at a period now where I feel more confident than ever before in my career.
“I don’t think I have even been in so many squads consecutively and got on the pitch so often as well. I feel I am playing really well and things are going in the right direction.
“The goal against Switzerland lifted a weight off my shoulders. As a striker, I am always judged on goals and playing well for my country.
“Playing for England is the top, top level and people questioned whether I could score for England. I have grown in confidence since then. All I can do if Fabio keeps selecting me is keep trying to score the goals. Hopefully, he’ll keep picking me.”
Bent also believes the recent positive attention he has received is a result of moving to a club with higher profile players.
“We tend to be quite near the top on Match of the Day,” he said.
“I went to Aston Villa to be playing with top players, Ashley Young and Stewart Downing. You want those players around you to create chances.”
