Kabulonga Baptist Community School at the weekend won the 2011 Fight Hunger Trophy during the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) commemoration of the annual “End Hunger: Walk the World” event aimed at raising awareness about the problem of child hunger.
The main activity, held at the National Sports Development Centre
(NASDEC), was a community schools football tournament which was scooped by Kabulonga Baptist Community School followed by Word of Life Community School of Chibolya. Fight Poverty Community School of Makeni were in third position.
Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Vice-President Davies Sampa was the guest of honour at the event, that saw hundreds of people from different walks of life, including school-going children and UN MDGs ambassador Marsha Moyo joining the WFP and its global partners, TNT, Unilever and DSM in commemorating the annual event.
This is according to a statement from WFP Zambia senior public information and resource mobilisation assistant, Mark Maseko.
Meanwhile, WFP country director and representative, Pablo Recalde said it was unacceptable that close to one billion people across the globe should go to bed hungry when means to assist them were available.
Recalde also bemoaned the high levels of stunting in Zambia which stood at 45 per cent, while undernourishment was at 15 per cent.
And Unilever Zambia country manager Johnston Gapu said companies should not just make profits but engage in corporate social responsibility and assist the vulnerable in society such as children.
