Jinja — After lifting the Eskom Source of Nile Open trophy almost a fortnight ago, Fred Wanzala is looking to keep in tiptop form as he seeks silverware abroad.

Wanzala received a one-year sponsorship offer from Eskom Uganda and it is on that basis that he will invade Bujumbura later today for the Burundi Open, set for June 1-4, a strong man. “I showed a lot of consistency and putted well during the Eskom tourney. I feel I am ready to take on the region’s elite,” said the 21-year-old national team star.

Wanzala will be the nation’s amateur flag bearer in the four-day 72-hole tournament that attracts golfers from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi. “I have been there (Burundi) twice and I know the conditions well,” said Wanzala before highlighting the importance of the timely sponsorship from Eskom. “With such good sponsorship, I have nothing to worry about. I am targeting a top three finish and enlighten my chances of going pro.”

When he returns from Burundi, Wanzala will also line up among other amateurs in the Professionals Qualifier scheduled for next week at the par-72 Uganda Golf Club (UGC) Kitante course.
