Maputo — Aida Matsangaisse, a deputy in the Mozambican parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, for the main opposition party, the former rebel movement Renamo, died in a traffic accident on Saturday in Chibabava district, in the central province of Sofala.
She was returning from Maputo, where she had attended a sitting of the Assembly, to her home province of Manica, accompanied by her husband, who also lost his life. A third occupant of the vehicle, a Ford Ranger, survived but suffered serious injuries, losing both his legs. He is currently in intensive care.
According to the head of the Renamo parliamentary list for Manica, Albino Faife, cited in Monday’s issue of the Beira daily “Diario de Mocambique”, Matsangaisse had planned to visit the Manica districts of Guro, Barue and Macossa, as part of her parliamentary work to monitor government activities in her constituency.
Matsangaisse was in her second term as a deputy. She was one of the three Renamo members on the Assembly’s Plan and Budget Commission. She was a niece of Andre Matade Matsangaisse, the first commander of Renamo, who died in 1979.
The bodies of Matsangaisse and her husband were taken to the hospital in the Manica provincial capital, Chimoio, on Sunday. The date of the funeral has not yet been announced.
Faife described the sudden death of Matsangaisse as a shock for her family, for Renamo, for the Assembly, and for the wider Mozambican society.
