To this end, the polytechnic has officially terminated the appointment of Sheba Quartey, Senior Instructor at the Department of Fashion Design and Technology of the Polytechnic, who was alleged to have engaged in lesbianism with some female students of the polytechnic.
According to the management, the polytechnic took the decision to dispense with the services of Miss Quartey after a disciplinary committee, duly constituted by the school, established some adverse findings against her, regarding her relationship with some female students in the Fashion Department.
The management noted that indeed, the swift response of the polytechnic in constituting the disciplinary committee that led to the sacking of the Senior Instructor was an indication of the resolve of management to maintain sanctity on campus.
Management was of the view that Miss. Quartey’s behaviour had not been consistent with her fiduciary relationship as a Senior Instructor, tasked with moulding students.
These were contained in a press release issued by the Polytechnic’s Legal Office and signed by Samuel Ahorlu Adinkrah, the Polytechnic Legal Counsel, of which DAILY GUIDE has a copy in its custody.
“The Polytechnic wants to assure the public, especially parents and guardians and other stakeholders of the Polytechnic that their wards are in safe hands and the Polytechnic would not allow a situation where the morals of these students are compromised. It is the ethos of the Polytechnic that no student, and worker for that matter, is put in harm’s way,” the statement added.
Management of the polytechnic, however, expressed dissatisfaction with the report carried by Daily Graphic on Thursday, May 26, 2011, which the polytechnic observed contained a number of factual inaccuracies intended to impugn the hard-won repute of the polytechnic.
The release stated that the Daily Graphic’s story unnecessarily made hasty conclusions that cast aspersion on students of the polytechnic, adding, “Management of the Polytechnic strongly refutes Daily Graphic’s slant and the false motives it is imputing on the over 8, 000 student population of the Polytechnic.
“It must be pointed out that offering sexual favor is not the basis for passing examinations at Takoradi Polytechnic. The Polytechnic has in place stringent measures including external moderations in the conduct of its examinations.
“Actually, the students that brought complaints against Miss. Quartey did not at any point claim that she has threatened to fail them in their papers. This was never an issue of consideration by the Disciplinary Committee. What the students were protesting is her obsession for their attention and eagerness to embarrass them in class when she is ignored. Management felt these advances were inconsistent with her role as a Senior Instructor.
“Thus, there was nothing about marks for which Daily Graphic should be making these unfair allegations,” it said.
The polytechnic assured the public, especially parents and guardians and other stakeholders that their wards were in safe hands and that it would not allow a situation where the morals of these students are compromised.
