THE RECTOR of Ho Polytechnic, Dr. Jakpasu Afun, has charged on his students and described those who were involved in the alleged sexual assault of the students of the Ho Nursing Training Institute as “Primitive, irrational and people from the jungle.”

He quoted the part of the Bible that talks about nothing separating “us” from the love of God (Romans 8:38,39) and interoperated it as follows: “There is only one thing that can separate you from the love of God, thus touching and holding unauthorized parts of a woman ‘Nyafu…Nyafu.”

“Being students at the premiere and best tertiary institution in the Volta region, one would have thought you will have a higher sense of discipline but you have proved to be otherwise with your indiscipline,” he added.

Dr. Afun, who was addressing the students at the school’s closing service for the semester, could not hide his disappointment with the students, saying, “We started off well in the beginning of the semester but now the end is directly opposite.”

He quoted that “only those who remain faithful till the end will wear the crown”.

The Rector turned his chastisement on the executives of the school’s Student Representative Council (SRC) and called them liars. He told the students, who greeted his comment with mixed feelings that “your SRC after paralyzing it finances went around and told you that the administration was refusing them financial assistance as well as guaranteeing loans for them. Today, they are here; all they said were lies”.

He asked the SRC to challenge him if what he was saying was untrue. Dr. Afun added, “As at now, the SRC owes the polytechnic. The administration provided cash for them and guaranteed their loans and they repay us with blatant arrogance and falsehood.”

Dr. Afun disclosed that his speech was the third edition. According to him, the first speech, which he wrote a month ago, was full of praise. However, after the unruly behaviour of the SRC and the incident with the sexual assault, he said he had to write a second speech which was full of criticisms. He said he was forced to write the third edition hours before the service to tone down the castigations.

The Rector cautioned the students against examination malpractice as their exams starts today. He announced that two students were expelled in last semester’s exams and many more could have been expelled had it not been for the intervention of the deans and heads of departments. He said, “It is better to fail honorably and get the opportunity to pass in a re-sit than to try anything stupid and be sacked.”

Dr. Afun advised them not to misbehave as they went home and that if they would do so, it should be with their books and not with “soft tissues”.

He added that their conducts should not affect the reputation of the school or their families.

When contacted, the SRC executives refused to comment on the allegations levelled against them by their Rector.
