FORMER member of the National Assembly, Nasiru Dantiye, has described as undemocratic and counter-productive to the development of democracy in Nigeria the amendment of the standing order by the Senate, which precludes newly-elected members from holding elective positions.

VICE CHANCELLOR of the Anambra State University (ANSU), Prof. Felix Okafor, has criticised the alleged double standard of some of the university’s teacher over the six-month-old strike by the joint academic and non-academic staff unions.

In his opening remarks at the inauguration of the South-East Zonal Executive Committee meeting of the Senior Staff Association or Nigerian Universities (SSANU) at the Uli campus of his institution at the weekend, Okafor admitted that some academic staff were playing double standard in the strike.

According to him, they had instigated and fuelled the industrial action but at the same time signed the letter denouncing the action with the management.

He said it was an unacceptable double standard posture.

He stated that in an effort to check future strikes over improved emoluments, he had set up a joint finance committee of workers and the management, adding that the panel is expected to lay open the finances of the university for all the agitators to see and appreciate the true position of things. He appealed for dialogue on all issues before taking extremist stance.

In his welcome address, the institution’s SSANU chapter chairman, Mr. Vincent Asoegwu, lamented the avoidable industrial action, wishing it to be deleted from the historical records of the university for obvious reasons.

He raised alarm over a circular by the management dated April 28, 2011, which sought for sustained peace and harmony. He added that everything depended on the management if it could only implement so far just one out of the 15 issues raised in their agitations.
