England boss Fabio Capello is set to hold talks with Rio Ferdinand in order to explain his decision to strip the Manchester United defender of his captaincy and award John Terry the armband, according to The Mirror.

Ferdinand was made skipper last year following stories regarding Terry’s private life led to the Chelsea man being forced to relinquish the role but the Italian reversed this decision in March.

However, Capello came in for criticism from Gary Neville and others at the time for failing to notify the former West Ham man of his intentions through a meeting or by phone, leading many to encourage Ferdinand to stand down from England duty altogether.

The situation threatened to worsen when Steven Gerrard admitted that he was contacted regarding the appointment of Terry.

Now however, the former Real Madrid manager is hoping to meet with Ferdinand to explain why Terry was reinstated as captain at his expense ahead of England’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland next Saturday.

The United defender, who played in his side’s defeat to Barcelona in Saturday’s Champions League final at Wembley, has vowed to continue for the Three Lions regardless of the supposed ill-treatment received and is said to not hold a grudge against Capello.
