Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson has said that his father, Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, could go on managing for another five years.
The Scot, who played under Sir Alex at Old Trafford, is currently in his second spell managing Peterborough after being sacked by Preston North End at the turn of the year.
Asked by The Telegraph if his father had any intention of quitting after a possible third Champions League triumph, he replied: “No, he’s just going to go on and on.
“Wherever it ends, it ends. It wouldn’t surprise me if he’s there in five years’ time, as long as his health’s fine.”
Ferguson senior has often been accused of being obsessed with beating rivals Liverpool’s records after he was quoted as saying he wanted to knock the Anfield club “off their perch”, and this year saw his Manchester United side win a record-breaking 19th league title.
His son, however, believes that eclipsing the Merseyside club is not his motivation and that this year’s victory will do little to blunt his competitive edge.
“It’s coincendental,” he continued.
“I know he said it, but he’s not obsessed by that at all. They’ve got to 19 and he’ll want 20, 21. He’s not obsessed by Liverpool’s European Cups, he’s not obsessed by Liverpool one iota. Neither should he be.”
The former Wrexham midfielder also went on to praise Sir Alex’s staying power at the top of English football, saying he has no equal.
“There are other managers who have done it for 20-25 years, but not at that level, at a club of that magnitude,” he said.
“To keep churning out success with different teams — I think that’s where you’ve got to start to appreciate it. Some managers couldn’t last five minutes at Old Trafford.”
