The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is to organise a re-run of Parliamentary primaries in two constituencies.
The party’s National Appeals Board took the decision after receiving petitions from the April 30 nationwide primaries.
The constituencies are Atwima Kwanwoma in the Ashanti Region, and North Tongu in the Volta Region.
In the case of Atwima Kwanwoma, there was a tie in the results of the sitting MP and another candidate who both had 205 votes.
In the North Tongu constituency, some electoral coordinators and some delegates who had the mandate to vote were prevented from voting therefore prompting the committee to recommend that the election be re-run in that constituency.
The General Secretary of the NPP, Mr. Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie told Citi News the party has scheduled June 4 for the re-run, pending a confirmation from the regions and the Electoral Commission.
“This Committee examined the evidence brought before it and after looking through a report from the Electoral Commission, they came to the conclusion that the election ought to be rerun. So it is on that basis that the poll will be held. We have agreed on a date but that has to be discussed with the regions and the Electoral Commission. Tentatively we are looking at having the elections on the 4th of June”.
In another development, a Former Deputy Minister of State, Vicky Bright has lost a petition she filed at the NPP’s Appeals Committee after losing the primaries to be NPP Parliamentary Candidate for the Okaikoi South Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.
Vicky Bright lost the primaries to Ahmed Asser by 12 votes in a hotly contested primaries held April 30 but suspected foul play after the results were declared.
She complained about the credibility of the voter’s register and suggested that some of her supporters were intimidated.
But the Committee quashed her appeal, saying the elections were free and fair. Meanwhile a second petition, from a yet to be disclosed source, is yet to be deliberated upon before a final decision on the Okaikoi South Constituency can be made.
The party’s National Executives together with the Flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo have completed a nationwide tour dubbed “all hands on deck”.
The tour which was meant to heal wounds after the parliamentary primaries has been described as successful.
