EASTERN Fodya Association of Zambia (EFAZ) has suspended its board chairperson Blessings Banda for allegedly failing to account for K247 million raised from the sale of tobacco during the 2008/9 farming season.

EFAZ vice-chairperson Chishala Chilufya confirmed the suspension in Chipata yesterday, saying Mr Banda had been given time to exculpate himself on the allegations.

Mr Chishala, who is also Tobacco Board of Zambia board member, said Mr Banda had been served with the suspension letter.

“EFAZ has suspended Mr Blessings Banda who is board chairperson for failing to account for K247 million raised from the sale of tobacco in the province during the 2008/9 farming season. This person has been given time to exculpate himself for alleged allegations,” he said.

When reached for comment, Mr Banda said the allegations levelled against him were false and baseless.

He, however, admitted receiving the suspension letter but was quick to mention that the allegations were meant to tarnish his name.

He wondered why he was not reported to the police if he had stolen money from EFAZ.

Mr Banda accused some EFAZ board members of masterminding the move to discredit him before tobacco farmers.

“I know the move is being spearheaded by some disgruntled EFAZ board members who are plotting my downfall,” he said.
