David De Gea looks increasingly likely to join Manchester United, according to Atletico Madrid’s chief executive.
Chief executive of the Spanish club Gil Marin has revealed that the 20-year-old has failed to reply to contract negotiations, which include an increased salary.
De Gea suppressed much of the speculation regarding his potential move to United earlier this week when he said no decision would be made about his future until after the European Under-21 Championships in Denmark next month.
But any hope the club had of keeping their talismanic Spaniard has now been squashed after Marin told Radio Marca: “My feeling is that he will go to United.
“We made him an offer for six years to multiply his salary, but we have heard nothing.
“With De Gea and his mother, it seems they will not accept.”
Sir Alex Ferguson revealed on Tuesday that De Gea is likely to join Old Trafford after being confirmed as the club’s firs-choice replacement for Edwin van der Sar.
“Well we’ve been working on it for quite a while. We identified him quite a while back as one we should go for. He’s a young goalkeeper, very quick, good composure, presence, he’s an outstanding replacement to,” said Ferguson.
“We’re looking at the same types of quality because the one great quality that Edwin always had was his composure and organisational ability and with David De Gea he’s very similar that way.”
