THE Athletics Kenya offices at Riadha House, Nairobi, have been burgled. Seven computers and documents were taken by the burglars on Tuesday night according to AK secretary general David Okeyo. “Three offices were broken into and seven computers stolen,” he said.

“We left everything under lock and key at about 5:30pm. We came to learn of the break in from our administrative officer Susan Kamau this morning. It is difficult to tell what happened on the night since the two guards manning the gate cannot be located. Police are conducting investigations,” Okeyo added. “The targeted offices included that of chairman Isaiah Kiplagat his secretary’s Brenda Oyugi, the statistics office held by Mathew Kiptum, Okeyo and that of his secretary Mercy Mbuko. Vice chairman Jack Tuwei’s office was also not spared.

Several drawers where important data was stored were also forced open. “We can not establish the motive but we are hoping to unravel this when the police conclude their investigations.”

The burglars appear to have only been interested in data since, apart from the computers and documents, nothing else was taken. “This is a huge blow to us since we have lost crucial information regarding the country’s preparation for forthcoming international races, especially the Daegu World Championships,” Okeyo said.

He, however, said operations will continue. The official said travel arrangements for athletes who had made requests to travel for international races abroad this weekend will not be affected.

“We cannot tell in certainty what documents have been lost at this moment. The place has been secured by police as they carry out their investigations. They have dusted for fingerprints and recorded the same for AK staff,” Okeyo said. “This incident sets us back considerably since replacing what has been lost will last a very long time.”
