Nairobi — Olympic champion Samuel Kamau Wanjiru’s burial arrangements could be back on track soon following a meeting between his mother, Hannah Wanjiru, and his Italian manager, Federico Rosa on Wednesday.
The two met in the presence of few other people for three hours at Thompson Falls Lodge in Nyahururu, where Wanjiru’s mother said to have expressed her willingness to have the postmortem examination on the athlete’s body done soon.
She was said to have travelled to Nakuru immediately soon after to meet her lawyers to explore the possibility of the postmortem being done on Friday.
Obtained court orders
Last week, Wanjiru’s mother obtained court orders barring her daughter-in-law, Teresia Njeri, from removing the body of the 2008 Beijing Olympics marathon gold medallist from the mortuary or proceeding with his burial arrangements until conclusive investigations into his death were carried out.
She also complained of being sidelined from the burial plans. The case comes up for inter-partes hearing on June 2.
Federico and Wanjiru’s mother were said to have discussed a wide range of issues on Wednesday, including the marathoner’s financial empire.
Demo and memorial service
On Tuesday, Federico told the media he had paid the athlete all his dues by last October.
He prevailed upon Wanjiru’s mother to have the burial plans fast-tracked to enable the athlete’s foreign friends make travel arrangements for the funeral.
Friends of Wanjiru met on Tuesday evening and threatened to hold a demonstration in Nyahururu Town on Wednesday and a memorial service at Nyahururu Municipal Stadium on Saturday.
They called on the government to intervene and have the marathon icon buried soon.
