Team Uganda comprising three runners won five medals at the Pan Africa Grand Prix Athletics Championship in Khartoum, Sudan. The country’s top sprinter Ali Ngaimoko accounted for two of these with silver in the 200m race and bronze in the 400m.

Geoffrey Kusuro, the world mountain champion two years ago, won gold in the 5000m after clocking 13 minutes, 55 seconds and 27 microseconds to beat Sudan’s Abdelimunim Yahia and Samson Gebreyohannes (Eritrea).

Juliet Chekwel, the lone female representative, won gold and silver in the 800m and 1500m respectively.

Kyabazinga event

Meanwhile, the sixth edition of the Kyabazinga Track and Field Athletics Championships gets underway this Saturday at Bugembe Stadium in Jinja.

Athletes will be trying to hit the qualifying mark for the World Championships and All Africa Games later this year.

That event marks the start of the Uganda Athletics Federation series of six regional competitions with northern, eastern, western, West Nile and Central waiting for their turn.
