A suspected Zambian drug trafficker arrested at the JKIA with cocaine worth Sh3.5 million was charged yesterday in a Kibera court. However, Catherine Banda’s lawyer requested the court to defer the plea to allow him time to scrutinise an affidavit the police will be using to oppose a bail application.
Banda is charged with trafficking in 891.9 grammes of cocaine on May 21. “The suspect, holding a Zambian passport, was arrested by anti-narcotics police officers as she was going to Ndola, Zambia from Nairobi on a KQ flight. The drugs were concealed in assorted tins and cosmetic tubes found in her suitcase,” the affidavit read in part.
The police will be opposing bail on the grounds that she is a foreigner with no family in Kenya and if released, she may sneak out of the country to evade trial. The affidavit was signed by Ruth Muinde, a senior police officer at the anti narcotics unit.
