Sunderland have denied making an illegal approach for West Ham United striker Demba Ba, insisting that they follow Premier League regulations when approaching players.

The Senegal striker has been in fine form for The Hammers since his January arrival from Hoffenheim, scoring seven goals in 12 league appearances in the club’s failed attempt to avoid relegation.

West Ham reported Steve Bruce’s side to the Premier League over alleged breaching of regulations for player transfers but a spokesman for the Black Cats denied any wrongdoing.

“Sunderland AFC is fully aware of the Premier League regulations pertaining to player recruitment.

“If we are interested in any player currently under contract with another club, we will speak directly to that club, in line with the regulations.”

Section K of the Premier League rulebook states that club’s cannot approach players either directly or indirectly without the prior written consent of their club, with even a statement of interest considered a breach of the rules.

A spokesman for the Premier League confirmed West Ham’s complaint, but so far has not elaborated any further.

“We have received a letter from West Ham United. We will look into their complaint to see if there is a case to answer.”
