Kenya: Athletics Association and Bank Meet Moved From Kipchoge to Kamariny Stadium

ATHLETICS Kenya /National Bank of Kenya meeting, which gets underway on Friday has been moved from Kipchoge Stadium in Eldoret to Kamariny Stadium in Iten.

Kipchoge stadium, which is the usual venue for athletics meeting in the region is under renovation after the Sports Stadia Management Board (SSMB) directed in February that the facility be given a face-lift.” Kipchoge Keino is under rehabilitation and the two-day event will have to be held at Kamariny Stadium,” said the AK Keiyo branch chairman Daniel Komen, whose region will host the event. According to Komen, the rehabilitation of Kamariny Stadium is complete and it will be suitable for the event. “Kamariny stadium meets the athletics’ standards and it will host the event since Kipchoge Stadium is being renovated,” said Komen.

Being the last weekend meeting on AK calendar, Komen said they expect a large number of athletes to turn up for the event in a bid to qualify for the IAAF World Championships scheduled for Daegu, South Korea in August.

“The event comes to the home of athletes and since many reside here, we expect a larger number of elite runners to take part. Eldoret meeting has always been competitive and we expect fireworks,” Komen added.

He said most athletes will have no choice but to avail themselves in Eldoret as they are yet to meet the qualifying times. AK North Rift assistant secretary David Letting said they will also use the meet to pick the team that will represent them at the national trials. He said discipline and consistency will be used as a yardstick to select the Rift Valley team.
