Major (Rtd) Boakye GyanA security expert and former close friend of Jerry Rawlings, Major (Rtd) Boakye Gyan has expressed his approval of the decision of National Security Advisor, Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah not to invite the former president for questioning over the infamous GHS 90 million security tapes.

Major Boakye Gyan says the move is the best decision by Brig. General Nunoo Mensah because of the former President’s status in the country.

It can be recalled that close confidant of the Rawlingses, Herbert Mensah alleged that he and Mr Rawlings had listened to security tapes obtained from the Castle on which some unidentified persons were alleged to be discussing using about GHS 90 million to fuel President Mills’ campaign for flag bearer of the NDC.

Mr Mensah’s revelation stirred controversy which is still raging on and calls came from not only NDC and government functionaries but President Mills himself asking National Security to investigate the allegations.

The National Security advisor, Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah (Retd) expressed National Security’s interest in pursuing the case and about a week ago, the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) detained Mr Mensah and questioned him about the tape which he claimed was in the possession of former President Rawlings.

Although the BNI and Brig. General Nunoo Mensah had stated that they may invite former President Rawlings, the National Security Advisor did an about turn on Monday when he disclosed that he was not interested in inviting Mr Rawlings and asked the media to use its inquisitorial skills to demand the whereabouts of the tape.

Although that statement has been received with mixed signals, Major Boakye Gyan says he agrees with that decision.

According to him, it would be better if the National Security apparatus pays Mr Rawlings a visit instead of inviting him because he is former President and must be accorded some respect.

Major Boakye Gyan however asked the media to discount former President Rawlings’ claim because he has no tape and alleged that he (Rawlings) is a serial liar.

He said Rawlings has claimed to have lots of tapes but has not been able to produce even one and asked the media to challenge him or call his bluff on the matter.
