Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has praised the club’s youngster who brought home the FA Youth Cup on Monday.

The young Red Devils defeated Sheffield United 6-3 on aggregate, with the second leg of the final ending 4-1 for the hosts at Old Trafford with midfielder Ravel Morrison and forward Will Keane both hitting twice.

Ferdinand, who lifted the Premier League trophy on Sunday, posted on his Twitter account: “Congratulations to our youth team on winning the FA Youth Cup. Some real talent coming through.”

Highly rated Morrison opened the scoring after showing good close control and a confident finish in the first half before Keane converted a penalty to make it 2-0.

A mazy Morrison run and shot from 20 yards saw him bag his second and Keane added another after Joe Ironside scored a consolation goal.

Michael Owen also tweeted his hopes for the players: “Congratulations to our youth team. Some cracking young players at the club who will hopefully progress into the first team one day.”

Coach Paul McGuinness expressed his pride with his players for winning the competition. “It’s absolutely fantastic,” he told MUTV. “A lot of these boys have been with us since seven, eight and nine in the development centres.

“They’ve come through every age group and it’s something they dream of it and now they’ve got it.

“They’re the tenth winners from Manchester United and that’s a record and fantastic for them. We’ve had some really tremendous youth teams with top names in the history of the club so to have a little in part in it is fantastic.”

He added: “Along the way, we’ve had some really tough games, some really big games and had to dig in and show a lot of the Manchester United spirit and come back.”
