Maputo — Unidentified gunmen murdered a Pakistani citizen on Friday in the southern Mozambican city of Matola, according to police sources cited by the independent television station, STV.
The victim, who has not been named, was driving along the Maputo-South Africa motorway, when his car was intercepted and forced to stop.
The gunmen ordered their victim’s wife and daughter out of the car, and then shot the Pakistani dead. The murderers then set fire to his vehicle, a Mercedes Benz saloon.
The police say they are hunting the killers, but do not yet know who they are. No motive for the crime has yet been suggested.
This is the second murder of a Pakistani in Mozambique within the last few months. A man named Syed Manzar Abbas was gunned down on the Maputo coast road on 31 December.
Nine months earlier Abbas had escaped a bomb attack against the luxury house he was renting in central Maputo. Abbas was the owner of the Al-Meca foreign exchange bureau. He is also reported to have had business dealings with the owners of the company J & B Recording.
One of the owners of J & B Recording, Mohammed Jawad was murdered in front of a Maputo restaurant in 2004. His partner, Baboo, met an equally violent death in Karachi, Pakistan, the previous year.
No-one has been arrested in connection with any of these crimes.
