Obafemi Martins has been recalled from his loan move to Birmingham City by Russian side Rubin Kazan.
The Nigerian’s goal secured the Blues’ League Cup win against Arsenal in January which was undoubtedly the high point of his six-month stay in English football.
Martins’ return to English football was blighted by stress fracture injury that required surgery and kept him out of the Alex McLeish’s side as they battled unsuccessfully against relegation.
The former Newcastle hit man is expected back in Russia to contribute to his club in the ongoing season where they lie 10th on the table.
“My time here at Birmingham City will stay with me, forever,” the 26 year-old told BBC in an interview.
“The club, fans, coaching staff and board treated me good. Unfortunately the campaign ended in relegation, but we only need to dwell on the positives and a remarkable time here was well spent with passionate fans and a thoroughly professional side.”
