A 25-year-old office assistant, Julius Ugonwu, was yesterday sentenced to two months imprisonment by an Abuja Magistrate Court for converting N200,500 belonging to a client for his personal use. Julius Ugonwu was convicted for criminal breach of trust and cheating, offences contrary to Sections 322 and 312 of the Penal Code.
Prosecutor Abdullahi Adamu informed the court that on May 16, the complainant, Aregbesola Adeseye, reported to the police that he gave the accused N200,500 to deposit in a bank account but he converted it into his personal use.
When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and told the court that con men duped him of the money.
Magistrate Vera Torkura sentenced him to two months imprisonment or to pay N2,000 as fine. The magistrate also advised the complainant to file a civil suit against the accused in order to be compensated for the money lost.
