In a rare move here Wednesday, Judge Blamo Dixon of Criminal Court ‘C’ cleared five inmates from the Monrovia Central prison for probation and rejected three others for failure to meet requirements for reprieve under Liberian laws.
Judge Blamo Dixon made the ruling after Attorney David W. Woah of the Public Defender’s Office filed a six-count motion seeking probation for 8 inmates.
Associate Justice Francis Korkpor of the Supreme Court, as well as several officials of Ministry of Justice, witnessed the rare event at Criminal Court ‘C’.
Judge Blamo Dixon said only 5 of the 8 names forwarded in the defense motion to benefit met the requirements for reprieve, while the court was studying the application for the three rejected inmates.
He warned those given reprieve to “behave well in society or risk being rearrested”.
Associate Justice Korkpor hailed the lawyers behind the reintroduction of the probation system, but warned beneficiaries to “see this as a great opportunity to behave well in society”.
