PORT HARCOURT-NATIONAL Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, has been told to demand for removal of subsidy on petroleum products as the removal will encourage private refineries in the country.
Governor Chibuike Amaechi, who spoke while commissioning the South South office of the union in Port Harcourt, said involvement of the private sector in refinery business will check over dependence on importation of petroleum product and also create jobs for the teeming unemployed youths.
The governor, who further called on the union to relocate its national secretariat to the South South region, questioned why such office should be outside the area when the region is the hub of oil and gas activities in the country.
“What is NUPENG’s Head Office doing in Lagos, when all the oil companies operate in Niger Delta? You should know what justice is all about, so, what is the struggle against unfair treatment?”
Promising to provide the secretariat with a power generating plant, Amaechi lauded the achievements of the union’s executive so far.
In their separate comments, the national president of the union, Mr Igwe Achese and the Chairman, Port Harcourt Council Secretariat, Godwin Eruba, said the South South office that was commissioned was a dream come true.
