More drama is expected to unfold as members of the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) converge for their annual general meeting at Makerere University Economic Policy Research Centre today.
The assembly is a continuation of the one that was held at Grand Imperial Hotel on February 11. Business was never completed then after several dramatic scenes led to prolonged arguments. The major highlights of that meeting were the resignation of vice-presidents Abbey Mubiru and William Tumwine.
The resignations though faded in contrast with the dismissal of former treasurer Andrew Geno Omalla and the trashing of the Commonwealth Games probe report.
Interestingly, another report into alleged mismanagement of Team Uganda at the Commonwealth Games is due to be released at the assembly.
Although it doesn’t bring to the fore any extraordinary revelations, the disclosure that UOC issued a bad cheque to Satguru Travel Agents, is likely to make heads role.
Shs30m debt
According to the report, a copy of which Daily Monitor has seen, Satguru claim that UOC owes them a balance of $12,866 (Shs30m) in tickets issued for the Games held in October last year.
Yet, $50,000 (Shs117m) was released to cater for the tickets. Over 10 officials who travelled to New Delhi but were never paid allowances are also expected to push for their money even as UOC claims to be doing badly, financially. Among its recommendations, the probe committee led by lawyer Kavuma Kabenge, remarked that officials who accessed funds illegally must refund.
UOC has also been ordered to refund $832 (Shs1.9m) received from table tennis player Linda Nalubanga as payment for an air ticket to Delhi. The committee found out that Nalubanga’s ticket had been paid for by government.
