Uganda: Lubega Looking to Upstage Mainstays

Not even Susan ‘Super Lady’ Muwonge who sits atop of the National Rally Championship (NRC) standings can claim to be in a comfort zone.

With Ponsiano Lwakataka taking the checkered flag in Rakai District for the third round different winner after three NRC calendar events this season, there still everything to fight for all.

Among those fancying their chances is OiLibya sponsored ace Godfrey Lubega, who came second during the Southern Motor Club (SMC) Challenge Rally early this month.

“We are still getting used to the car and should post some good times,” said an optimistic Lubega, whose podium finish in Masaka marked his first completed race since acquiring a Subaru N8 last year.

Co-driven by Godfrey Ssemakula, talk about Lubega’s evident talent has done rounds at several service parks, more recently at Kasasa Service Park during the SMC Challenge Rally.

Last year during the Independence Rally, Lubega, who was in pole position, flattered to deceive when his machine suffered an engine failure with just 2km to the flag. During the season opener in Mbarara, Lubega’s engine gave way in the first section and the same occurred with two sections to complete the Umospoc Challenge Rally that was won by Ronald Ssebuguzi. It was Lubega tracking him.

“I am more mature now and I should be able to win a rally before the end of this year. Currently am focusing on putting up a good show at the looming KCB Pearl of Africa Rally. I would like to upstage some of the big names,” he added. The prestigious Pearl of Africa Rally is scheduled for July 15-17.
