A 17- year -old girl ganged raped in Moyale has been airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment. The girl is said to have been attacked by a group of six men who allegedly raped her, inserted a broken bottle and burnt her genitals with a hot iron bar.
The Saturday’s incidence sparked off protests and ethnic riots, which have left one person dead and scores injured. Tension is still high in the town, according to area MP Mohamed Mahamud Ali. “The conflict in this area which has been peaceful for long has been provoked by this demonic, barbaric and ugly incidence, and the police’s inaction. But I have mobilised the area elders and leaders who are trying to reunite the communities,” Mahamud said on arrival at Wilson Airport after flying in the victim who is now receiving treatment at Nairobi Women’s Hospital.
The MP and locals said business and transport in town has been paralysed and schools closed for more than four days. “We have been cut off from the rest of Kenya. As we talk, no car can get in or out of Moyale,” the MP ,who is also an assistant minister for Special Programmes said.
He said conflicts could have been averted if police had acted on the complaint from the victim’s family and arrested the perpetrators. “All this was because police in Moyale dismissed locals when they reported the matter. Even the area DCIO dismissed my complainants telling them to go and fight as they are used to and this is what angered the people. I condemn them and blame them fully for what is happening in the area now,” Mahamud said.
