The Director of Communications at the President Koku Anyidoho has dismissed claims that the UN Secretary General’s commendation for President J.E.A. Mill for the pivotal role he played to bring peace to Cote d’Ivoire was fabricated by the state owned media.
He said the honor bestowed on President Mills by the UN Secretary General has sent shivers down the spine of the opposition.
The May 23 edition of the Daily Graphic with the headline Prez Mills, best leader in Africa quoted the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr Ban Ki-moon, to have lauded President John Evans Atta Mills for his role in the peace process in La Cote d’Ivoire.
According to the report, the UN Secretary General said the exemplary leadership role of President Mills in crisis situations in Africa was unmatched, and described him as, “the best leader on the continent”.
Mr. Ban Ki-moon made the commendation when he made a stopover at the Kotoka International Airport on his way to the investiture of President Alassane Ouattara in Cote d’Ivoire, Saturday.
But some analysts affiliated to the opposition have strongly criticized the publication by the state owned media.
They claim the comments lack credibility questioning exactly the role President Mills played in the resolution of the Ivorian crisis to warrant such a commendation from the UN Secretary General.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, Koku Anyidoho said “Ban Ki-moon praised President Mills for his good leadership style”.
He explained that the UN Secretary General’s commendation to the president is because of the critical role he played which led to the swearing-in of Alassane Ouattara as the new Ivorian president.
The Head of Communications at the Presidency noted that President Mills is now leading a renaissance of African leaders who seek to ensure peace on the sub-region.
Koku Anyidoho revealed that President Mills used subtle diplomacy in dealing with the Gbagbo and Ouattara camps for a lasting solution to the impasse.
“That is how come Ban Ki-moon will openly praise President Mills for the solid negotiation role he played on the quiet not on the roof tops; not empty talks. This is what we call mature leadership”.
He said President Mills has been vindicated for not committing troops to Cote d’Ivoire to oust Laurent Gbagbo as per the decision by ECOWAS.
Koku Anyihoho observed that in spite of efforts from the opposition both internal and external to derail President Mills from achieving his better Ghana Agenda, he remains unperturbed and focused.
Meanwhile, the Editor-in-chief of The New Crusading Guide newspaper, Mr Malik Kweku Baako has warned that the UN Secretary General’s commendation of President Mills should not be use as propaganda.
He said regardless of whether the story is true or not it is a boost for the image of the country.
