Nairobi — Kenya will have more than 20 disciplines at this year’s All Africa Games.

The games are crucial to the country’s sportsmen, especially those eyeing next year’s London Olympics.

However, little progress is seen on the ground in terms of preparation and training of the respective teams that have qualified.

The games, dubbed the “African Olympics”, will be in Maputo, Mozambique, from September 3 and every attention must be placed on this crucial event.

The usual habit of waiting for the last minute rush is not ideal.

With a sixth place finish in Algiers four years ago, Kenya must roll up its sleeves for a bruising battle against bigwigs Algeria, South Africa, Egypt, Tunisia, and Nigeria to claw its way back to the top three.

A budget of Sh270 million has been set aside for the games.

The local management committee must broaden Kenya’s scope beyond traditional events like track and field.

Fans need to see Kenya dominating in swimming, handball, tennis, and other disciplines.

This is crucial now that athletics will have its elite stars in Daegu, South Korea, for the World Championships, which will be staged almost at the same time.

Quality and merit must be used as the benchmark for selection of the team.
